  • FAQ
What are the benefits of therapy (counseling)?
Many people are able to handle life problems with the support of friends or family but sometimes a problem is overwhelming. A professional counselor can offer unbiased expertise to find solutions that friends and family aren't able to do. Therapy can be helpful to identify and address mental health disorders (such as depression or ADHD). Therapy can also help with more mild problems that are causing distress to an individual or family and getting in the way of a happy and successful life.

Some people have success using medication to handle mental health problems. Counseling can enhance the effectiveness of medications and teach life-long strategies to deal with problems.

    What is the cost?
I charge $75.00 per session. I accept checks or cash. Families with financial difficulty may qualify for a sliding scale fee depending on annual family income.

    Do you accept insurance?
I accept many insurance plans and will work with you and your insurance company to find out what services are covered before our first meeting. When you call to inquire about an appointment I will take your insurance information and find out the conditions of your coverage.

*Some families opt to pay out of pocket to maintain privacy and avoid a record of mental health diagnosis. All insurance companies require a diagnosis be made.

    How do you maintain privacy?
Each client's confidentiality is very important to me. In fact, my license with the State Board and the Ethical Standards of my social work degree hold me to the highest standards possible in maintaining client confidentiality.

All files are locked in a safe. I will provide you a confidential office setting and no one in the building will have access to your information beside myself. I will shred closed records after the legal mandated time has elapsed, for me to retain them.

I will not and cannot speak about a client with any individual, other than my client and his/her legal guardian, without written consent. When leaving a message for a client, I will not leave details other than my name and phone number. I do not use email unless the client approves that means of communication. If I see a client in public I usually acknowledge them with a quick greeting and nothing more. I will not discuss our relationship in front of others nor to my friends and family.

There are a few times when I am legally responsible for breaking confidentiality such as if a client is being abused or if a client threatens to kill someone. In those instances I will follow legal and professional standards to handle them.

Who decides how long therapy lasts and what goals are worked on?
The client and/or their family determine the goals and length of the therapy. I will offer suggestions and my clinical opinion but I firmly believe that each client is in charge of deciding what needs to be accomplished and when this has happened. I will use a goal oriented approach and regularly evaluate with each client how our work together is going and what the future plans are. Because of my training as a social worker I look for areas in each client's life where success in therapy can be maintained outside of session such as in social groups and other activities.

In addition if I am not meeting a client's particular needs or unqualified to handle a particular problem I will assist the client to find another professional.
